Brand Strategy Guru, Simon Middleton, joins our Millionaire Mentor Team!

Brand Strategy Guru, Simon Middleton, has become one of the EBA Millionaire Mentors.  Simon looks forward to sharing his highly effective brand strategies and has devised a unique plan for building a brand during a recession.

Simon, who is the author of Build A Brand In 30 Days has advised British Airways, Barclays, Aviva, Prêt A Manger and The Broads National Park on branding, will explain to EBA delegates why you should increase your marketing activities during recession and that you  should also consider increasing your prices. “In a recession everybody goes price-cutting crazy, but whilst that will generally give a short term sales boost it can also do long term damage to your brand, dragging you into commodity hell. If your brand really wants to win a place in the psyche of the market place, being cheap isn’t necessarily going to help.”

And concerning marketing, Simon told EBA’s Bev James, “The convention in recession is to cut marketing budgets. It happens all the time. But marketing efforts will lead you out of the recession. Cutting marketing first is like giving away your shoes! I would never suggest that marketing budgets shouldn’t be reviewed and made to work harder for every penny. But don’t just slash at them and think you are helping your brand!”

Bev James, MD and founder of the EBA said: “It’s great to have a brand expert of Simon’s calibre on board. He is a prime asset for the Entrepreneurs’ Business Academy and our customers will benefit greatly from his input.”

I’m so pleased to see this.

We are lucky enough to have Simon Middleton based in Norwich.

I went to a seminar by Simon when I first started up in business and it sticks out in my memory because Simon is so interesting, informative and gives really practical advice that I still use in my business.

Whenever I hear that Simon is speaking, I make sure I go to the event – he thinks very differently to most people – he makes you see things from a different angle.

Sarah is being very kind, but I’m delighted that Norwich and Norfolk are represented amongst the members of EBA.

Sometimes I think it is a problem with some business advisers (whatever their particular area of speciality) to fall between two stools.

I get approached regularly (in fact I had just such a call this morning) from entrepreneurs who have already spoken to a number of advisers, with frustrating results.

From the enthusiastic entrepreneur’s perspective the advisers often seem to be either focused to a fault on detail and process (which can stifle creativity and enterprise itself) or so vague and conceptual that their advice disperses in the wind like fairy gold… Impossible to hold on to and impossible to utilise.

I think the trick for both adviser and entrepreneur is to achieve balance.

For the individual adviser i think it’s an obligation to be honest and direct, and to give realistic true-grit advice when it’s required. But there is also an obligation to respect amd nurture the creative and entrepreneurial spirit. And closely tied to this is an obligation to call in other specialists when required and not to try to hold on to the ‘client’ in a selfish way. With this morning’s enquiry I agreed to a one-day exploratory brand consultation but also strongly recommended that the client talk to another specialist with much stronger skills and experience in the logistics and process of the particular sector in question.

For their part the obligation on the client is very simple: to listen and to be open minded and honest in considering the advice given.

If, as Sarah kindly says, my approach is valuable, then I think it’s because i try to stick to these principles.
