Business In The Spotlight - Consulte

We interviewed Kate Pexton, founder of Consulte, for this month’s “Business in the Spotlight”.

Here’s what we discovered about the business, the woman behind the business and her journey as a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Business Academy.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS

Consulte is a recruitment business that specializes in finding seasoned Recruitment Consultants, Managers and Directors for a range of companies across multiple sectors, with a particular strength in the Oil & Gas sector.

WHEN DID YOU SET THE BUSINESS UP?

I set up Consulte in 2001 with 4 years’ recruitment experience, having worked for two other recruitment companies.

I started in recruitment working for a well respected national generalist business, which gave me great training and development, and then a small owner managed business which gave me superb insight into how businesses “really” work!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BIG BUSINESS IDEA?

I was working 16 hour days and forced to “shift skin” (a term actually used in the office at one point when we had not hit target) – I felt that there was a more consultative, long term way of approaching business – hence the company name.

WHAT IS YOUR USP?

The 3 “R”’s – Respect, Relationships and Results.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS CHALLENGE TO DATE?

2008….it was my toughest year in recruitment ever. I had built a strong profile in the Accountancy recruitment arena and every one of my clients was making redundancies.

The challenge was that quite literally my market shrank over a very short space of time. I had to let staff go and it was a tough time. I had to think on my feet and realign the whole business and shift tack.

I was fortunate to forge a relationship with Fircroft, the worlds leading and most respected Oil and Gas recruitment business, and have enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial relationship with them ever since.

WHAT ELEMENT OF THE BUSINESS DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

I love the relationship development in recruitment, I am very much of the opinion that you get out what you put in and I enjoy making new connections as well as fostering existing relationships, both on the candidate and client side of what we do.

I also am blessed with a fantastic and growing team here who have all taken a big leap of faith in coming to join me, and I love seeing them grow and achieve success.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE?

“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” - Henry Ford

My father also told me when I was small; “They put a man on the moon before they put wheels on a suitcase, so think outside of the box……”

This has stayed with me ever since!

WHAT PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES DO YOU THINK CONTRIBUTES TO SUCCESS IN BUSINESS?

Tenacity, drive, goal orientation and enthusiasm coupled with an ability to develop instant rapport and to think outside the box. Also, not to take yourself too seriously.

I treat everyone with respect, whatever their “badge” in business – after all I am also the cleaner here as well as the owner, I would hope that people would treat me the same whichever hat I am wearing.

HOW IMPORTANT IS SOCIAL MEDIA TO YOUR BUSINESS?

Increasingly so – LinkedIn is a particularly good tool with our worldwide audience.

I am still coming to grips with Twitter for business and Facebook is just for social tool for me, though I see that it might be useful for certain areas of our business as we grow into new markets.

WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE THINKING OF STARTING A BUSINESS FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Read “Do It! or Ditch It” by EBA founder and managing director, Bev James and also “The E-Myth” by Michael E Gerber.

Make sure that everything is in place and that you are aware of your own strengths and weaknesses. It was a couple of years before I invested in an accountant as I was so cost conscious and I realize now how much more time I would have had to concentrate on the things I did well that only I could only do had I done this sooner.

Make sure people know about you also – use every available opportunity to tell people about what you do. Be clear with how you describe your business. It is so much easier nowadays than it was 10 years ago.

WHERE DID YOU HEAR ABOUT EBA?

I am a protégé with The Coaching Academy and heard about The EBA through this route.

WHY DID YOU JOIN EBA?

The concept of ongoing business mastery learning, alongside driven and motivated people who are passionate about their business. I am a perpetual learner and was considering doing an MBA however this appealed so much more due to the practical side and variety within the course material.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE CORE BENEFITS SO FAR?

The EBA have had a direct and positive impact on Consulte’s revenue since I joined and being a member has increased my confidence in business and I know that support and relevant, friendly advice is just a “phone call away”.

WHAT WOULD BE THE MAIN REASON YOU COULD RECOMMEND THE EBA TO DATE?

The EBA has given me the confidence to grow my business and realize its true capabilities and potential. I would recommend the EBA whatever the size of your business or at whichever stage of growth you are you will always find something of direct use, interest, relevance and benefit to you and your team.

IN SUMMARY

Bev James says: “Kate is a valued member of The EBA and is fully embracing the breadth of business mastery there for her covering skillset and mindset. I look forward to seeing great things happen for Consulte in due course.”

James Caan says: “Every business needs a niche and this applies as much to a recruitment business as any other. Kate’s is playing to one of her strengths as a specialist working in the Oil & Gas sector and clients often prefer to go to a specialist rather than a generalist. I wish Kate every success with her venture.”
