Entrepreneur, Richard Hobbs, shares his views about the EBA

When I first found out about the EBA almost a year ago, I was in the early stages of developing my business.  I have a very technical background in IT and a lot of experience working in a business. The interest for me was the idea of successful business people helping others.

It has been really great to see the EBA evolve and grow and I feel that we have been on a journey together. I love working with people, I know that that is perhaps a surprising statement for a technology person (geek). The team at the EBA have been very supportive and Bev has taught me a lot about how to manage and motivate people. I have enjoyed working closely with Steve Clarke who has taught me so much and is so passionate about everything that he has been a particular inspiration.

I have a lot to thank the EBA for, as through them I met my business partner.  We actually met at the very first business seminar. We are now on the verge of fully launching Spark Network, our IT solutions and Support Company.  Spark Network has been a real pleasure to build and its foundations lie in what the EBA has taught us.

I recently enjoyed a fantastic weekend retreat with the EBA where I learnt a lot from the mentors but also so much from the other Fast Track members. Over the weekend we went into real detail about positioning a business in the market and how you need to structure your business for growth and even sale.

Bev James, Nic Rixon, Jamie Constable, Guy Levine and Steve Clarke put so much effort into all the Fast Track members businesses and then to have James Caan giving direct advice has probably halved the retirement age (if I ever wanted to!!!).

It was quite incredible to be in a room with a group of highly focused energetic and passionate people, and looking at how I have developed personally over the time I have spent with the EBA it is truly remarkable.

For example last month Spark Network undertook a quite large project for an internationally recognised sports brand (who I cannot name). Everything was going well and then suddenly the whole management team was removed, we were asked to leave site two days before we were due to finish the project. The whole management team we were working with were gone and the people who filled their shoes suddenly turned round and refused to pay and tried to bully us with their size. Thanks to the confidence and skills I gained since being with the EBA I made sure that Spark Network stood firm and eventually we were paid in full.  Before the EBA experience, I am not sure if the outcome would have been the same.

Also my thanks to Nic Rixon for getting me to buy coloured pens and give my wife what she wants, since she is a Thinker and I am a Knower.  I recommend asking him about this – his reasons for coloured pens, that is – if you get the opportunity!  I’ll leave it for you to find out what this means!

So it is with big arms that I want to hug all the EBA team.

It’s been a delight working with Richard and indeed his new business partner Alyas.

I would describe the changes Richard has gone through in the relatively short time I’ve known him as truly transformational. As a businessman and as a person, he walks and talks with a new found confidence. Great to see.

Richard takes information onboard like a sponge. A pleasure to work with – great things are heading his way – and he’s ready.
