Tony Banks from Channel 4's Secret Millionaire joins the EBA Millionaire Mentors

In 1991 former Falklands War Para Tony Banks identified an opportunity in the care sector to provide a new standard of privately owned and operated care homes. He bought Lisden House in the countryside setting of Kirriemuir and spent more than a year and £750,000 to convert the private house into an industry-leading care home that residents and their families would enjoy and be proud of.

Since then, Balhousie Care Group has grown into one of Scotland’s leading providers of residential care facilities. Tony runs his business with a focus on balancing the commercial aspects and responsibilities of a care home owner with the ambitions to set a new standard in the sector.

The Balhousie Care Group includes 22 homes with capacity for up to 850 residents. Tony plans to create 11 more sites by 2011, double the number of beds to 1,500 within three years Tony is estimated to be worth over £60m as the sole shareholder of Balhousie, which grew 80% in 2009 and is on track to almost double its £8m turnover to £18m in 2010.

The Scottish Falkland’s veteran is also a member of the appeal board for the Combat Stress Enemy Within appeal, which is aiming to raise £30m to help veterans traumatised by wartime experiences and he has personally donated a six figure sum to the charity.

He began supporting the charity after appearing in Channel 4′s The Secret Millionaire last year, living undercover in Liverpool. There, he met Iraq war veteran Lee Sanger, who suffered from PTSD. This experience prompted him to become involved with Combat Stress and provided the impetus for his return to the Falklands this year where he carried out a four day, 50-plus mile trek to Port Stanley for a Channel 4 documentary to raise awareness of, and much needed funds for, Combat Stress.

Tony is a board member of the Scottish Entrepreneurial Exchange and is absolutely passionate about promoting, encouraging and nurturing entrepreneurial talent.

Tony will be featuring at our next Entrepreneurs’ Business Academy One Day Total Business Mastery Seminar which will take place on Saturday 25th September. Book your tickets now to see Tony and our other EBA Millionaire Mentors.

Tony Banks is one of the most successful businessmen in Scotland, a self-made multimillionaire who runs a corporate empire of care homes across the country. But behind this success is a story of an unresolved war past.

An ex-Para, Tony Banks fought in the Falklands conflict and his painful war memories continue to trouble him today. He walked away from that conflict with a war trophy which he has been with him for the last 28 years, a trumpet taken from an Argentinian prisoner of war. Could this simple musical instrument hold the key to putting the trauma of war behind him?

With over one million war veterans in Scotland today, almost 100,000 of them suffer mental health conditions as a result of their military service. This film follows Tony Banks as he explores the issue of mental illness and whether a trip to Argentina to give the trumpet back to its original owner will help him finally find closure.

The trip to Argentina certainly filled me with much trepidation. The biggest fear for me was not knowing how I would be received. However, as this was a human interest story and also as conciliation between old adversaries, I thought this was the right thing to do. Most importantly, I wanted this documentary to highlight my concerns for the future of our veterans and to also raise awareness of Combat Stress and their work. I hope you all enjoy the programme and feel free to contact me with any feedback.

Hi Sue

Just back from my trip to Kenya.

I’m glad you enjoyed the programme, it was one of the most surreal experiences for me having to go back and meet Omar. Its great the support that Combat Stress receive from a charity like Help the Heroes, glad you enjoyed the concert. My mission is to raise awareness of Combat Stress up here in Scotland. In the last year the amount of ex Vets that suffer from PTSD has risen by a whopping 75%!!

All the Best Tony

Tony, just watched the secret millionaire show over here in Toronto on BBC Canada.

Absolutely loved it and made me real happy to see the reaction of your recipients of the money> I cried and don’t mind saying it.

Is there any footage of the Falklands trip i can get a look at on the internet?

Must have been an amazing trip. Do you know of any such help groups for troops here in Toronto ?

Great work.if your ever over here let me know and i will buy you a pint.

Hello Alan

Sorry that I am just getting back to you now.

I’m glad you enjoyed the programme as much as I did making it. It really brings home to you what really matters in life and that is to spread some happiness to our society. The charities that I met whilst filming were all worth while causes and still to this day I am offering them support and advice in their fundraising quests. The footage of the falklands isnt online yet but if you contact my PA Cheryl Flucker on cheryl.flucker@balhousiecare.co.uk she will organise to send you a copy of the Falklands programme.

Best Wishes

Tony Banks

Hi Tony,

I watched your programme on Thursday and thought it was great, as to helping those people in Liverpool and the great work you are doing in business of running your carehomes. It’s a pity that there is not more people like you who have alot of money to help the normal population out like you have.
Once again all the very best in your future projects.

yours Graham

Hi
I’ve just watched ‘The Secret Millionaire Changed My life’ and it is so reassuring that the earlier ‘Secret Millionaire’ is more than a bit of one-off reality TV.

I’m so glad Tony that it gave you the opportunity to ‘heal’ yourself while giving so much help to others. To see a well respected and successful man revealing vulnerability and emotion while retaining such dignity can only be a good example for young men generally. So refreshing when so much TV is negative, competitive or aggressive.

In particular, my admiration goes out to all the young men and women whose ‘employment’ calls upon them to experience horrific situations I can only imagine so that my family, friends and I can continue to live in a democracy with the rights and freedom we so often take for granted. Thank you for bringing attention to Combat Stress, a charity I knew little about but know so much more now I’ve ‘googled’ it.
Long may your generous spirit and example last!
Ilena
